Youth program to start

Posted on by stlgacadmin

The Club is excited to enter another phase of development by starting a youth program for hurling and Gaelic football. With the donation of helmets, hurleys and sliothars from the NACB, we are looking to get youth hurling off the ground. The goal is to teach the games and the fundamentals in a fun and safe fashion so another generation of St. Louisans will represent the Club. Here are the details:

Ages – We’re looking to start with boys and girls aged 9-11. Of course, if you know someone older or younger that might be interested, e-mail me, and we can talk about accommodating.

When and Where – The hurling clinics will be held on hurling league weekends when camogie isn’t being played at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent’s Park. The first clinic will be April 21. The other planned dates are 5/5, 6/2, 6/16, and 6/30. If interest is high, we’ll continue further into the summer. Gaelic football will start up in the autumn.

Equipment – We have helmets, hurleys and sliothars. So the kids will just need cleats (and shin guards would be a good idea). However, kids will not be able to keep the equipment after practice.

Cost – For the first clinics, there is no charge.

Coaching – Instruction will be done by Club members in small groups. Criminal background checks are required.

What You Can Do – First, spread the word. Our club has grown based on word of mouth. So if your own children are interested, bring them out. Tell your family, co-workers, friends, etc. about the program. Second, if you’d like to help out in any fashion, e-mail Kevin Sullivan.

Finally, because equipment is limited for hurling, so are the numbers we can accommodate. So please have people e-mail me with interest or with questions at stlgacyouth@gmail.com.

Rules and regulations

Posted on by stlgacadmin

It’s always helpful to have an idea of how to play the game and what’s considered a penalty.

Hurling (and Gaelic football) rules: http://www.gaa.ie/content/documents/publications/official_guides/Official_Guide_2011_Part_2.pdf

Camogie rules: http://www.camogie.ie/official-rules.asp

The club does have some variations on these rules. Our handbook, which will be sent out before the games start, will identify some of those variations.

If you have any questions about a rule, ask a board member, captain or referee (better to raise a question before the game than during it).

Spring 2012 hurling season *updated*

Posted on by stlgacadmin

The St. Louis Gaelic Athletic Club has set the dates for the spring 2012 hurling season.

The hurling league is coed; the club welcomes new players. The league has eight teams. Dues, which include jerseys, will be $75 ($90 for women who will also play camogie).

Practices start on Saturday, Feb. 25, at 11 a.m. for new players (practice for returning players starts at noon), at St. Vincent’s Park in north county. New players, please arrive by 10:45 a.m. to be ready to start practice at 11 a.m. Wednesday evening practices will begin on March 14 and continue through the season, and will be at 5:30 p.m. at Langenberg Field. On March 31, the first game will be held.

The league holds a player draft the weekend before games begin, and the teams and jerseys are revealed the week of the first game. New players must attend two practices before being drafted to a team.

Games will be held each Saturday through April and May (with a break on May 12 and on Memorial Day weekend). The playoffs will be June 23, and the championship game will be June 30. The schedule has shifted to allow for the club to participate in a hurling tournament in Chicago on May 12, and could shift due to severe weather or other conflicts.

Players must have a helmet with full-face protection (a hockey helmet is fine). Hurleys can be purchased at practices.  Cleats and shin guards are recommended.

Camogie

The dates for camogie games (camogie is women’s hurling) have also been set. This year, the women will have a two-team league for the first time.

Camogie practices will be held on Sundays starting Feb. 26 at 11 a.m. at Tilles Park. Practices will switch to Tuesdays on March 13 and will be held at 5:15 p.m. at Tilles Park on Hampton. Women who play camogie can also play in the hurling league.

Camogie games will be held every other Saturday at 10 a.m. during the hurling season (March 31, April 14, 28; May 19; June 9, 23).

Dues for camogie players will be $35. Women who play camogie and hurling will pay $90. Jerseys are included in the dues. Camogie players are also required to have helmets with full-face protection; cleats and shin guards are recommended.

Players interested in joining are encouraged to sign up for the club’s email lists. You can also find us on Facebook.

Anyone interested is welcome — our club is committed to teaching the game to new members as well as improving the skills of our returning players.

See you on the pitch.
